June is a hallmark month as it’s National Camping Month and Great Outdoors Month but it’s also National Homeownership Month. Nothing brings these two together better than an RV lifestyle!

Many dream about hitting the open road and exploring the country and great outdoors while bringing the comfort of home along for the ride. But is it the right move for you? We’ll cover five things to know!

While you’re hitting the road, check out our blog Top National Parks in the US to Visit Before Summer Ends

  1. Finding an RV That Fits Your Life and Budget: There are a lot of RV options today. Some hitch to a vehicle and others are top of the line motorhomes where you’ll live in the lap of luxury. So which one can you swing? If you’re concerned about retirement costs you may want to check out this blog 6 Unexpected Retirement Costs to Prepare For.
  2. Rent an RV First as a Trial: Before going full throttle into RV ownership, rent an RV first and take a test trip to see if you like it. Taking a short weekend trip will give you a good idea as sometimes the idea of something and the reality are two very different things.
  3. Are You Ready (and Physically Able) to Drive an RV: It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of an RV lifestyle but being practical is important. There are many considerations for an RV lifestyle especially if you have medical or mobility issues. Your companion, spouse or partner may not be able to drive anymore and are you willing and able to handle all the driving? Having some practical talks about this topic is key before making this lifestyle decision.
  4. Insurance and Licensing: RVs aren’t cheap though you can research and find a used RV. You’ll also need to contact your insurance company to see how your insurance costs will be affected. You may also need to get a special driver’s license to operate an RV or even a road test so check out the registry of motor vehicles for your state to see. And speaking of insurance, before you hit the road, you’ll want to make sure your insurance beneficiary information is fully updated. And if you unsure about life insurance, please check out our blog What is Life Insurance?
  5. Close Quarters: Living in an RV permanently or for a trip means living in a tight space with your spouse or partner. All that time together may be great but it can also be stressful so this is another topic to discuss and plan for. Maybe when you get to your destination you each choose to take some time apart? And if you’re traveling solo be aware of the space needs you have when considering an RV.
